SUSANA GASTELUMENDI

SUSANA GASTELUMENDI VILABOA

MEDITERRANEAN BREEZE

From the window of my apartment in a Montevidean neighborhood facing the sea, I contemplated its immensity in all forms during my childhood and adolescence.

I never was tired of watching the sea through the large window every day. Every day it was a different image, unsolicited and free, in colours of the sea, large or small waves, the sky reflecting a great storm that gave the sea a silver colour...

The breezes of Montevideo accompanied me since my childhood, loaded with the salty aroma of the sea. In each breath of wind, I felt the strength and energy of the sea and ocean.

The breeze of the Mediterranean Sea transports me sensorially from the past to the present and from the present to the past.

THE WORK

Susana's work is situated at a particular intersection between the tangible photography reality and the expressive subjectivity of drawing.

The fusion between both media is not simply a juxtaposition, but a true visual alchemy where the photographic image serves as a starting point for a personal reinterpretation.

What distinguishes this work is the hierarchization of the artist's vision in the strokes through the sketch. It is not just a reproduction of the reality captured by the lens, but a transmutation where the artist's hand, through watercolor or ink, imposes its own reading. The strokes, far from being mere contours, become expressive elements that emphasize certain details, blur others and finaly build a new visual narrative.

This expression moves in an ambiguous and fascinating territory: that of "magical reality". The resulting images are neither purely real nor purely imaginary, but a synthesis of both. Photography provides the anchor in the concrete, while drawing introduces the dreamlike element, the subjective interpretation, the personal imprint of the artist. In this tension between the objective and the subjective that the strength of the work lies.
